I don't understand, and the documentation doesn't explain, what the Name and Value entries are supposed to be for a Check Box field. For example, if the choices are Chevy, Dodge, and Ford, what do I enter as Name and Value for each?

I think the Name field will be revealed when a user post an ad. The value you may use the same as name.. or you can assign numbers. The value is used if you have a conditional field that depend on what users choose on that check box field. You will use the value when you choose that.
You have the checkbox field:
Name A B C
Value 1 2 3

so when you create other field that will be conditional by the checkbox field you will chose a value 1 2 or 3. But in conclusion you can use what do you want for value.

You can also put the same value in the two field name and value like:
Name Dodge, Value Dodge
Name Ford, Value Ford.
